the ethos of Smooga

owl logoThe ethos of Smooga is to make PE and sport, as well as play and activities of all kinds, more accessible and more inclusive in schools and clubs, whilst helping to solve the common problems of space, time, budget and safety.

This family business was set up by Keith Place a qualified rugby union coach and all round sports enthusiast and Carolyn Place, a landscape architect and play-area designer. They established Smooga Ltd in 2012, believing that creating safe, designated areas for PE, sport and play will remove conflict, aid development, provoke interest and provide new creative opportunities for schools and sports clubs everywhere.

a smoogathe story of the brand

The initial premise came from a recognised need to provide safe areas for PE, sport, play and other activities in school playgrounds.

PE and school sport is coming under scrutiny and therefore schools need to find new ways to optimise the space they have available for recreation, sport and play. More important still, is the fact that our children need more opportunities to play, in a time when children seem to enjoy less freedom.

Smooga offers a solution to schools and clubs that encourages children to participate safely in games and activities when they are in playgrounds and other managed spaces. The key benefit to using a ‘smooga’ is that it helps to resolve the conflicts of space in playgrounds. Ball games can dominate the available space. Here is an answer – to encourage ball games, whilst keeping the games controlled and contained. Importantly this allows all the other children to enjoy their own space to play safely.

why is sport important?

Good, positive early experiences of any kind of sport can have a lasting impact on a young person and can provide the foundation for a lifetime’s involvement in sporting activity of many kinds. Sport, when introduced into a young persons’ life, can have enormous benefits for personal development, social skills and levels of confidence, not to mention the obvious health benefits of an active lifestyle - excellent habits to embed at an early age. The need to provide areas for play, sport and learning are clearly apparent, and this has received an even greater degree of focus in the UK, particularly since the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games when the phrase ‘olympic legacy’ first raised it head.

We at Smooga are delighted and excited to be involved in encouraging the mix of PE, play and sport in skills and levels of confidence, not to mention the obvious health benefits of an active lifestyle - excellent habits to embed at an early age. The need to provide areas for play, PE and school sport and learning are clearly apparent, and this has received an even greater degree of focus in the UK, following the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Commonwealth games in 2014.
